Excepting Christ

This past few semesters I’ve challenged myself to write out my frustrations with the Church. These flyers-pamphlets are written on issues that *should* be confronting the Church. I’ve written them and presented them with a somewhat polemical tilt. My intention is not to convince or woo others to my understanding of the issues. My intention is to spark conversation, to bring these issues to the table we break the one loaf on so that one day we may break that same bread with those we currently leave on the streets.

There are currently four flyer-pamphlets.
The first, titled “Excepting Christ – Radical Hospitality” and is written from the “radical” perspective that, as Christians, our couches are not our own, and that we should offer our couches, if not our beds, to the poor of Durham. You can download the PDF file here.

The second flyer, titled “Excepting Christ – Jesus Meets a Gay Man,” was not written by me. Credits for authorship are in the pdf file itself. Unlike the general ideological battles that surround issues of sex and gender in the Church, this pamphlet simply suggests that treating homosexuals as Jesus treated the woman at the well, as people, might well re-weave the texture and landscape of sex and gender issues within the Church. The third flyer, titled “Excepting Christ – The Death of St. Patrick,” deals with the thinly veiled, state sponsored terrorism, we call “Capital Punishment.” North Carolina is continuing it’s practices of murdering people in the name of justice. I hope that these words and images prompt others into considering what actions and ideas we may creatively use to shed light into this darkness. You can download the PDF file here.

The third flyer, titled “Excepting Christ – On Voting,” deals with power issues inherent to the issue of voting. Mid-term elections are approaching and I wrote this to ask my fellow div students to re-think their actions on election day. I hope that by presenting a reading of scripture and the Christian tradition that highlights the way in which voting is treasonous to the kingdom that more people will start to change the church, rather than the government. Special thanks to Ginger for her help in the final paragraphs of this pamphlet. You can download the PDF file here.
