This morning at Trinity during the children’s sermon Pastor Duke talked about being thankful. He told the children a story about a fancy Sunday Dinner his mother cooked. Roast Beast, Mashed Potatoes etc. He didn’t want any of it so he casually told her “I don’t want any of this, can I have a PB&J?” to which she said “go fix it yourself!”
Later during the offering we discovered that somehow we’d forgotten to bring the offering plates into the sanctuary for the service. (oops) so we passed a basket.
But the crowning event of the service was the prayer of thanksgiving given by John U. after the offering was collected. John wove both the PB&J story, as well as the lack of offering plates. Here is his prayer:
Oh Lord, you have prepared a wonderful feast for us. Don’t let us settle for a PB&J. Open our eyes to all the blessings that surround us, that we might live with an onlooking vision of gratitude. We offer these gifts in your honor. Help us to see the baskets you have provided instead of the offering plates we forgot. Embolden us to offer our very lives that we might live for the praise of Christ’s glory.

That was indeed nicely done.
I like accidents in church, as strange as that sounds. I think it reminds both those who made the mistake and those witnessing not to take ourselves too seriously. When everything goes according to plan, i think there is a temptation to think we have it all together, and church, i think, is one place we need to be reminded that we’re stumbling through a lot of this.
